At BeSmartOnline, Malta's national Safer Internet Centre, we understand the ever-present challenges of the digital world. While headlines often focus on specific events, our commitment to online safety is a continuous effort. This article delves into the critical issues we tackle daily, empowering you and your loved ones to navigate the online world with confidence.
Open Communication: Key to Addressing Online Harm
Our conversations with parents and educators consistently address critical issues like cyberbullying, sexting, revenge porn, and online grooming. It's important to have open and honest discussions, even when they become difficult. Remember, blame doesn't solve the problem. In situations involving minors and non-consensual sharing of intimate images or self-generated material, the focus should always be on protecting the victim.
Here in Malta, reports of cyberbullying and online harassment have unfortunately been on the rise. Open communication between parents, educators, and young people is crucial to identify and address these issues effectively.
Emerging Threats: AI and Deepfakes
A recent disturbing trend involves the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to create deepfakes. These manipulated videos can be incredibly realistic and cause immense emotional distress.
We will continue to collaborate with law enforcement to hold perpetrators accountable and offer support to victims through our helpline (179) and online presence (BeSmartOnline on Facebook). We also partner with schools to educate students on online safety and the importance of empathy and respect.
